What is the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America?
Some people love dogs. Some people love dogs. Some people are so passionate about dogs that they create groups for a particular breed.
This last group includes the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America, (ECSCA). The ECSCA is the nation’s organization responsible for breeding, regulating, and just plain appreciating English Cocker Spaniels.
It sounds great, but what does the ECSCA do? We’ll show you how to get involved, and give you details about the organization’s activities and responsibilities.
Before we can answer this, we have to answer a different-yet-similar question: what is the American Kennel Club (AKC)?
The AKC is a registry for purebred dogs. The AKC can help you determine if your prize dog is purebred or a fancy mutt. They keep records and host competitions.
Although the AKC is an enormous organization, it actually consists of many smaller organizations. One national organization represents every breed that the AKC recognizes. The English Cocker Spaniel Association (ECSCA) is the representative organization.
The ECSCA itself is a national organization made up of several smaller English Cocker Spaniel-related organizations.
It’s like this: If you have ever seen a TV dog show, you will know that there is one breed representative. A dog that beat other dogs of its breed at smaller shows is how it earned a place on the show. These shows were hosted by organizations like the ECSCA.
What does the ECSCA do?
On its website, the club provides a comprehensive listing of its aims. They go into great detail about their goals. These are the basic functions of Cliff’s Notes.
- To encourage the breeding of purebred English Cocker Spaniels
- To determine the breed standards
- To safeguard the interests of the breed (we don’t know what it means but it sounds alarming — are we certain that English Cocker Spaniels won’t try to take over the world?
- Encourage sportsmanlike competition in shows and field trials
- To sanction and conduct these shows and field tests
- To encourage the formation of smaller membership organizations
It sounds like they maintain a list of English Cocker Spaniel breeders, and organize competitions. If you want to learn more about these dogs, they are likely to be a great resource.
How do you become a member of the ECSCA What are the Perks of Membership?
The application process to join the ECSCA is quite complicated. First, you will need to visit their website to read the constitution and by-laws. Then you will have to complete a membership application.
However, it’s not as simple as it seems. You will need to submit the application, which asks you to show that you have owned or had ownership of purebred English Cocker Spaniels. Additionally, you will need to have 3 current members endorse your candidacy. You should make sure you don’t have any English Cocker Spaniel-related skeletons.
After you have completed the application, it will be sent to members for comments. This takes 30 days and sounds a lot like a roast. However, you won’t know what’s being said about your character. The board will vote on your membership after the 30-day period.
If you pass the application process, you will reach the final step: paying your dues. You can purchase a regular membership for $40 per year. However, you can also get associate or junior memberships for $20 less. You will also need the magazine for $60 per annum.
What are the perks of membership? These are just a few perks that come with membership.
- You are issued a membership card along with an illustrated breed standard.
- Invited to their events
- You have the chance to chair or participate in committees
- You have the right to vote for club issues and choose judges for their shows
If you are a big fan of English Cocker Spaniels in general, then most of this should be of interest to you.
Should You Join ECSCA?
Membership in an ECSCA group is like many hobbies. It can be very polarizing. Either you are really into it, or you don’t find it appealing to your needs.
