When a Female Dog is In Heat, How to Calm a Male Dog?

Your female dog will become heat if they are not properly trained. They become fertile when this happens. To increase their chances of getting pregnant, there are several behavioral and biological changes that can be made.

These changes are often made to attract a male dog, which can cause them to act out a little. A male and female dog can cause a lot of problems if the female is in heat. Males will sometimes do anything to reach the females. Even males who are normally well-behaved can be quite unpredictable.

You can’t prevent it, except for having the female spayed. There are some things you can do to make this experience a little more pleasant for everyone.

Separate the dogs

This is important to avoid unwanted pregnancy. If you are planning on having puppies, an intact male shouldn’t be around a pregnant female. You should keep the dogs apart by providing something solid to keep them apart. Even if the dogs are able to stay close, a baby gate won’t work.

You should keep your dogs separated until the end of the female cycle. It is possible to move them around. This increases the chances of them coming into contact. The male will be driven crazy by the female’s smell. If possible, keep them apart from each other.

It is possible to have a relative take care of your male dog while you are away. Although this is the best option, it is not always possible.

2. Hide the female’s scent

When a female is in heat, she will smell it. This is how they attract their mate. The male dog can probably smell it even if you don’t feel the need. While they are heating up, do your best to control the scent of the female. You will need to clean their living areas more often than usual. Vinegar is often the best choice, as it masks most of the smell.

A mild shampoo can be used to bathe your dog. This shouldn’t dry their skin too much, but it can make a huge difference to give them a few more baths during the time they are in heat. The bathwater can be scented by adding a little apple cider vinegar.

A doggy diaper can be used on your female. It will mask the smell and act as a barrier if your dogs do manage to come together despite all your efforts.

3. Exercise

Get your male dog outside as often as you can. Take your male dog on walks to make him tired. Even if there is a male in heat, a tired dog can be a good dog. This will give your male dog some respite from the temptations of the female dog.

During this time, you should not take your female dog on walks. You don’t want the male neighbor’s dog to escape and show up at your home. You should keep her indoors as much as you can but don’t forget to play with her.

4. Menthol spray is a great option.

They also make menthol sprays to help dogs in heat. These sprays can be overwhelming for your female scent, but calm down your male significantly.

These sprays should be applied to your female dog. We recommend spraying these sprays on both your male and female dogs. Your male can’t smell your female if it smells like menthol.

These sprays can be used multiple times per day if needed. Follow the instructions for any spray you use. Sprays that are made for humans like Vicks VapoRub can be used. You should make sure your dogs don’t lick the spray, as it can be toxic.
